No. 15 Bulldogs Down MSU-Northern in 3-0 Sweep

DILLON, Mont. – The no. 15 ranked Montana Western women's volleyball team (19-7, 9-4) got back on track this afternoon after they defeated MSU-Northern (11-14, 3-10).


Jazi Smith and Danyel Martin led the Bulldogs, each totaling 12 kills apiece in the sweep.



How It Happened

It was all Western from the start as the Bulldogs ran on to a quick 11-4 lead in the set. The Skylights battled back, cutting the lead back to three. Maxine Hoagland helped to reset the Bulldog offense and push UMW to a 6-1 scoring run for an 18-11 lead. An ace from Madisyn Frazier combined with a kill from Peyton Vogl closed the set to give UMW the first set win at 25-18.


The Bulldogs continued to show dominance, running on to a 21-12 lead. The Skylights found late sparks and closed the gap to 23-18. Smith and Martin finished the set, each recording a kill to win 25-19.


Up 11-10 midway through the third frame, the Bulldogs hit their stride and used a 6-0 run to flip the momentum and go up 17-10. Northern closed the gap to three late in the frame, but back-to-back kills from Hoagland and Smith was enough to shut down the Skylights and close the final set out up 25-19.



Notables

  • Today's sweep was the Bulldogs' sixth 3-0 sweep of the season.

  • Western has now won seven straight over the Skylights in the series. They are 8-2 in their last ten matchups with MSU-N.

  • Taylor Petersen tallied 23 assists in the game, good for 7.6 assists per set.

  • Vogl led the Bulldog defensive front with six blocks.

  • Frazier tallied a pair of service aces in the game.


Up Next

Montana Western enters their final week of conference play this upcoming week. First with their final home contest of the season against no. 19 Montana Tech on Thursday Nov. 7 at 7pm. They will then hit the road to close out conference at Rocky Mountain College on Saturday Nov. 9.
