Beaverhead Search And Rescue News

Submitted by: Mel Rice, Public Relations Officer

The Beaverhead Search and Rescue held its May meeting Wednesday night the 1st.  The meeting was called to order at 7:05 PM by commander, Kolby Malesich. There were a total of 20 members in attendance.  Trent Cottom updated the unit on its membership status.  There are a total of 56 active members at present.  He also informed us that we have three individuals that have received probationary membership status.  These individuals are David Broadhead, John Grant, and John Bazemore.  When you see these gentlemen thank them for their service and dedication.

The unit is losing a very good member in Dan Cahill.  Dan came to the unit a few years ago from California where he was in law enforcement.  He has been very active with the group and will be missed. We wish him the best of luck with his new endeavors in Bozeman.

Several members of the BVHD SAR cooked dinner for the Night at the Elks (stag night) on the 17th of April.  A steak dinner with all the trimmings was served to about 20 individuals.  Members participating in the event were: Mel Rice, Tara Remely, Jaime Trivette, Adam Norlander, and Steve Mock.  It proved to be a wonderful evening out.

The last order of business was the critique of the unit’s last call out.  On April 22, the Sheriff’s office received a 911 call about a lost individual in the Dice Creek area west of Dillon.   A small group had gone out to look for shed horns.  The group was supposed to meet at a certain location at a specific time.  When everyone was to meet up, a 71 year old lady member of the party was nowhere to be found.

It was stated she had a bad knee so the rest of the party became rightfully concerned.  A member of the party requested assistance in locating the missing lady.  Beaverhead S&R was paged at 3:00 PM.  Hasty teams were organized with necessary equipment and were ready for deployment.  At 3:45 PM a call came in that the missing lady had been located and was in good health.  Apparently there was miss communication with all members of the party.  Instead of going to the rendezvous area she walked back to the vehicles where they had started.  S and R members put away the equipment and enjoyed their evening.

Members of your Beaverhead Search and Rescue that showed up for the call were: Brad Wagner, Brian Vinson, Cody Schnee, Dan Cahill, Jason Ericksen, Lance Hopman, Mark Smith, Parke Scott, Shane Puyear, Tara Remely, Trevor Hyland, and acting as IC was Kolby Malesich.  Thanks guys and gals for your dedication.

It’s looking like spring has sprung for the most part.  Everyone is anxious to get out and do something in the hills. Just remember it is still early.  There are some areas that have a fair amount of snow yet and now that it is starting to melt things will be sloppy and muddy.  Be prepared with proper clothing for weather changes and have the right equipment in those vehicles.  Have fun but be safe.  “In the Business of Saving Lives”, your Beaverhead Search and Rescue.
